In 1994 the first version of PHP was developed by Rasmus Lerdorf (a Software engineer) for his personal use. It was a set of Micros (CGI wrapper). The basic use of developing this was for Rasmus Lerdorf to analyze who has visited his site. In the next year he introduced another package and gave it the “Personal Home Page Tools”. Afterwards it was amended and added the “Form Interpreter” package to it and it was given the name PHP/FI which became very famous in users.
Than version 2 of PHP was introduced which had the support of parsing SQL Queries. In 1997 there were about 50,000 websites which were using PHP in them. It was difficult for one person to handle PHP as it turned very famous in users, so a little development team started its work on PHP as an Open Source Module and after those developers from all over the world started contributing in it.
Two Israelis, Zeev Suraski and Andi Gutmans, started their work and made the Parsers of version 3 and 4. They gave it the name of Zend (Zend = Zeev and Andi).
In 1998 it was estimated that 100,000 unique domains were using PHP. It increased to 2 millions in 2000 and in 2004 to 17 millions. There are so many big websites which are using PHP and Content Management Systems like WordPress which is build on PHP. So you can say that PHP is the most dominant server side language on the internet.
